What is a server?

A server is a hard drive, a storage device, that is connected to the internet. You can save the files that make up your website on that server, just like you can save images and music on the hard drive of your home computer.

Your website files consist of:

  • your web pages
  • style sheets
  • scripts
  • images
  • text
  • video
  • images
  • text
  • video

By saving your website files on your server, you make your website accessible to the whole world as that server (hard drive) is connected to the internet.

Software designed to deal with code is installed on a server. Servers and their software are constantly updated and upgraded to follow the ongoing evolution of hardware and software, just like your home computer, it's operating system and your applications.
